Assembly instructions for flat-pack and ready-to-assemble furniture
Flat-pack furniture is bought online, built at home, and judged in the reviews. A wordless drawing or a vague step turns into a support call or a return. UnboxStep turns your PDF manual into an interactive guide with each step, part and screw shown on the phone, and an assistant for the step the customer is stuck on.
Why furniture manuals cause support calls
- Many are short and mostly pictures; one manual in our sample was two picture-only pages. When a picture is ambiguous there is nothing to read.
- Some manuals in our wider sample tell the customer to contact the maker rather than return the product, which makes the manual the first support channel.
- Some say a second person ("a friend") is needed for one step and give no other help.
- The step order matters: some manuals warn that skipping the sequence causes problems later.
(In our small sample: bookcase, loft bed and bunk bed manuals ran from 14 to 28 pages. From a small sample of public manuals we read in October 2026. Not a statistic for the whole industry. See our assembly manuals study.)
What the customer gets
- The parts for the current step, with the screws and dowels highlighted.
- A question box for "which side is this?" or "I have one screw left".
- A guide in their language.
What your team gets
- A view of which steps get questions, so you can fix the manual where customers stop.
- Updates without reprinting, and one QR code for every sales channel and market.
- Missing-part reports that arrive with the product, step and part.

Frequently asked questions
Does it work for wordless, picture-only manuals?
UnboxStep reads the manual and builds the steps, and your team reviews every step. Very ambiguous pictures need a human check, which is why every step is approved.
Can customers get help if they are missing a part?
Yes. The assistant helps them identify the part, and a missing-part report reaches your team with the product, step and part.
Do I need 3D models of the furniture?
No. The PDF manual is enough; a 3D file is optional and adds animated steps.
Will it replace my printed manual?
You can keep the PDF and add a QR code that opens the interactive guide.
